Apple wants to make its own modems for iPhone-iPad

Apple equips its mobile devices with processors it designs, but with regard to their modem, it is necessarily sourcing chips from Qualcomm and Intel. This has caused problems to the company from time to time, while not allowing it to be as independent as it would.

However, They has already begun to have a new department with engineers working under the guidance of Johny Srouji, Lead Chip Designer from 2008 at Apple. Indeed, they ads for engineering finds concern the San Diego area, where Qualcomm is home.

This investment will be fruitful as the first Apple modem is expected from 2021 onwards, so the 2019 and 2020 enabled devices, either 4G or 5G enabled, will continue to incorporate third party modems. Apple will save enough of the money it provided for each modem.
